Sir Hans Heysen (1877–1968) is one of Australia's most celebrated landscape painters, renowned for his majestic depictions of the Australian bush, particularly the towering gum trees of South Australia. Born in Germany and migrating to Australia as a child, Heysen played a pivotal role in shaping Australia's artistic identity in the early twentieth century. His work captured the unique character, light and grandeur of the Australian landscape, helping foster a sense of national pride and appreciation for the natural environment. In 1920, he became the first Australian artist to be knighted for his contribution to the arts.
