Biography

David Aspden was one of Australia's leading abstract painters, recognised for his pivotal contribution to the development of colour abstraction and non-objective painting in Australia during the latter half of the twentieth century. Emerging in the 1960s, Aspden rejected figurative representation in favour of a highly refined visual language built upon colour, form and spatial relationships, creating luminous compositions that reflect a sustained engagement with light, atmosphere and perception. While informed by international developments in Colour Field painting and geometric abstraction, his work remained deeply responsive to the distinctive qualities of the Australian landscape, translating its expansive light and environment into evocative abstract forms. Aspden exhibited extensively throughout Australia and internationally, including representing Australia at the São Paulo Art Biennial in 1969, and his work is held in major public collections including the National Gallery of Australia, the National Gallery of Victoria and the Art Gallery of New South Wales.
