Biography
Dale Frank is one of Australia's most innovative contemporary artists, internationally recognised for his materially driven abstract paintings that challenge conventional ideas of authorship, process and the painted surface. Emerging in the early 1980s, Frank quickly established an international reputation through exhibitions in Europe, the United States and Australia, developing a distinctive practice centred on the unpredictable interactions of poured and manipulated industrial varnishes, pigments and resins. Rejecting traditional brushwork, his paintings harness chance, chemistry and gravity to produce richly complex, iridescent surfaces that shift according to light and the viewer's perspective. Situated within broader histories of abstraction, conceptual art and process-based painting, Frank's work has played a significant role in expanding the language of contemporary Australian art.
