Biography
Yimula Munuŋgurr is a senior Yolŋu artist from Yirrkala in north-east Arnhem Land, Northern Territory, and a member of one of Australia's most distinguished artistic families. Working through Buku-Larrŋgay Mulka Centre, he paints the sacred narratives, clan histories and ancestral knowledge of his Gumatj and related Yolŋu estates, employing the intricate rarrk (cross-hatching) technique and natural earth pigments that have characterised Arnhem Land bark painting for generations. His works are distinguished by their refined composition, rhythmic patterning and profound cultural authority, expressing complex systems of law, kinship and connection to Country while continuing one of the world's oldest unbroken artistic traditions.
