Merrkiyawuy M. is a Yolŋu artist from Yirrkala in north-east Arnhem Land, where she works through the renowned Buku-Larrŋgay Mulka Centre. Her paintings continue one of the world's oldest continuous artistic traditions, employing natural earth pigments and the intricate rarrk (cross-hatching) technique to depict ancestral narratives, clan identities and the enduring relationship between Yolŋu people and Country. Characterised by their finely balanced compositions and rhythmic precision, her works embody a profound cultural knowledge while demonstrating the continuing vitality of contemporary Arnhem Land bark painting.
