Biography

Jack Wunuwun was a highly respected Yolŋu artist from north-east Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory and part of the Marrakulu clan. Working from Yirrkala, Wunuwun became one of Australia's most significant bark painters and printmakers, creating works that conveyed the sacred ancestral narratives, clan designs (miny'tji) and ceremonial traditions of his people. His paintings are distinguished by their intricate rarrk (cross-hatched) patterning and sophisticated compositions, which communicate both spiritual meaning and deep cultural knowledge. Throughout his career, Wunuwun played an important role in preserving and sharing Yolŋu culture through art. His works are represented in major public collections including the National Gallery of Australia, the Art Gallery of New South Wales and the National Gallery of Victoria, reflecting his enduring contribution to Indigenous Australian art and his position as one of the leading Arnhem Land artists of the twentieth century.
