Sir Hans Heysen was born in Hamburg, Germany and arrived in Adelaide, South Australia in 1884. A watercolourist, who studied at the Adelaide School of Design under Harry P. Gill and the Academie de Beaux-Arts, Paris, Heysen's first exhibition was held at the Guild Hall, Melbourne in 1908.
